School of Humanities

Nanjing University of the Arts School of Humanities is a teaching unit established along with the prosperous development of the domestic and foreign cultural industries and courses, against the background that the strategy of expanding disciplines was launched across the university, and relying on the Teaching Department of Cultural Fundamentals. It is mainly responsible for developing emerging and practical “great art” majors and undertakes the teaching of the commonly-required courses in Nanjing University of the Arts. In 2006, it began to enroll Arts Management undergraduates with two major directions-Music and Fine Arts; in 2008, the major of Cultural Relics Restoration was put under the administration of the School of Humanities from Summit College; and in 2009, it began to enroll Cultural Heritages undergraduates with three major directions-Music, Fine Arts and Arts and Crafts. Currently, all of the above majors have been open to China for postgraduates. The School of Humanities has such teaching units as the Department of Arts Management, the Department of Cultural Relics Restoration, the Department of Cultural Heritages, the Department of Literature, the Department of English, the Department of Public Sports, and the Department of Ideological and Political Education; 523 students at school and 52 full-time teachers, of which 4 are professors, 15 are associate professors, 3 are with a Ph.D. degree, more than 20 are with a master’s degree, 3 have been selected as Excellent Young Core Teachers under the Qing Lan Project of Jiangsu Province, 1 has won the prize from Post-doctors in China Foundation, and more than 20 are adjunct professors.

Since its establishment, the School of Humanities has been adhering to the educational philosophy of “Grandeur and Simplicity, Profundity and Beauty, Gradual Renewal of Humanities”, and sticking to the working thought of “synchronized planning of commonly-required courses and professional courses, equal attention to teaching and scientific researches, and simultaneous development of undergraduate education and postgraduate education. It manages to make full use of the academic resources both inside and outside the university, explores efficient educational mechanisms, makes vigorous efforts to strengthen discipline construction and faculty construction, gains educational advantages, forms its own educational characteristics, and improves its influence.

Scientific Researches: insisting on combining art majors with the principles of management, economics, law, history and pedagogics; positively carrying out the construction of degree programs; building academic platforms, setting up such academic organizations as the intangible cultural heritage research center, contemporary art ethics and law Center, Chinese art market research center and the Chinese research center for critical biographies of the artists so as to cultivate talents and accumulate achievements. In accordance with the requirement of “promoting scientific researches through teaching and enriching teaching with scientific researches”, it gives full play to the leading role of professors and the teamwork spirit, encourages all teachers to participate in projects that aim at building Jiangsu Province as a cultural power so as to make itself efficient in talent cultivation, academic studies and achievement conversion in such fields as art management, cultural relics restoration, cultural heritages, etc.

Teaching: insisting on the principle of enrolling students in accordance with different professional directions before cultivating students in the corresponding direction, pushing forward the reform of the credit system in an all-round manner, improving the course system that combines basic courses with open courses, paying special attention to the teaching of professional theories, enhancing teaching quality in practice, deepening the construction of teaching contents, holding the young teachers’ open classes activity in the second semester of each school year and key teachers’ demonstration classes activity in the first semester of each school year, and instructing teachers to make active explorations in transforming talent cultivation, creating new teaching models, and reforming the course system, helping form a good atmosphere of teaching and educating students, studying teaching and reforming methods.

Student Work: taking the special awards for humanities (Award for Study, Award for Scientific Researches, Award for Planning, Award for Organization, Award for Practice and Award for Contributing to Welfare) selection as the guidance and the “societies of humanities: good battlefields for social practices; forum of humanities: good channels for scientific researches; journals of humanities: good carriers for meditation; and dormitories of humanities: good places for happy lives” as the unique characteristics; making positive efforts to learn from new concepts regarding talent cultivation; establishing a mechanism that connects school education with family education; integrating the activities launched by the Student Union, societies, class committees and Youth League branches; implementing the humanistic education in an all-round manner; deepening the colorful campus cultural activities; vigorously and effectively strengthening the construction of a good learning atmosphere and class environment; striving to create a relaxing, democratic and fair environment for the growth of talents; and cultivating new-type art talents featured by “high professional qualities, effective employment skills and a strong desire to start their own businesses”.
