Call for Entries for the China International Chinese Character Cultural Creative Design Competition

Chinese characters are remarkable, and the formation and development of the Chinese nation cannot be separated from the maintenance of Chinese characters. As the gene and important carrier of Chinese culture, Chinese characters are not only a witness to the development and inheritance of Chinese civilization, but also a common wealth of people around the world. In order to further promote Chinese character culture, and have Chinese characters integrated with creativity into daily life and beautify the world, the National Museum of Chinese Writing, together with the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, and the NanjingUniversity of the Arts, will jointly hold the 2023 China International Chinese Character Cultural CreativeDesign Competition, and publicly solicit excellent cultural creative design works at home and abroad.

I. Theme of the Competition
The competition is based on integrating Chinese characters into daily life and art, showcasing the beauty of Chinese characters with creativity, and promoting the development of Chinese character culture through creativity.

II. Time Schedule
1. Collection of Works: From now until July 31, 2023
2. Expert Lectures and Guidance: April to May 2023
3. Selection and Announcement of Results: August 2023
4. Award-Winning Works Exhibition: October 2023.

III. Requirements for Participation
(1) Eligibility
Individuals, groups, enterprises, and institutions worldwide engaged in cultural creative design, with research and development capabilities or a passion for font design, can participate in the competition according to their respective categories.

 2. Content of Competition 
This competition is divided into a theme-based creative group and a free creative group. Design categories include product design, fashion design, book illustrations, font & font library design, digital cultural creative products, etc. The form of design works and materials used are not limited.

 Using ancient Chinese characters such as oracle bone script, bronze inscriptions, seal script, and clerical script as the subject, carry out cultural creativity and derivative design.


 [Free Creative Group]

 Using Chinese characters (fonts) as the subject, carry out cultural creativity and derivative design.


IV. Submission Requirements
1. Participants must provide an application form, a commitment letter, and an electronic template work. Entries can be submitted in the name of a team or an individual, with no limit on the number of entries. The author's signatures for a single (a set of) work must not exceed three people.
(1) Fill out the application form according to the requirements, and the work introduction should include information such as the design concept, production process, and mass production instructions, within 200 words limit. Attach a scanned copy of the signed commitment letter (see Annex 1 and 2).
(2) Electronic template work: Put the design in the designated electronic template, with specifications in JPG image format, CMYK color mode, accuracy of 300dpi, and size of 44cm wide by 60cm high (see Annex 3).
(3) The dynamic demonstration video should not exceed 2 minutes in length, and the video file size should not exceed 50M. The video submitted should be in MP4 format.
2. The entries must be the original works of the participants and must not infringe on the intellectual property rights or other related rights of others. All entries have not been publicly published on websites, newspapers, magazines, or any other media outlets, nor have they applied for patents or intellectual property registration, nor have they been sold in the market or participated in similar competitions or activities before. In case of any intellectual property or copyright disputes arising from the entries, the organizer reserves the right to disqualify the participants and hold them responsible for the consequences.
3. Prior to receiving the certificate (award), winners must sign an intellectual property transfer agreement with the National Museum of Chinese Writing. By accepting the award, winners agree to transfer all relevant intellectual property rights of the award-winning works to the National Museum of Chinese Writing. The winners have the right to be named but the National Museum of Chinese Writing has the right to apply for intellectual property protection, redesign, production, exhibition, publication and other rights related to the work.
4. Submission Method
(1) Electronic Submission
Compress the application form, commitment letter, and electronic template work into one zip file, and name the compressed file as work category + author's name + unit + supervisor (if any) + work name + work group. Send it to the email: wzgwcds@126.com. The subject of the email should also be work category + author's name + unit + supervisor (if any) + work name + work group.

(2) Mail Submission
For mailed entries, please mark Cultural Creative Design Competition on the outer packaging and label the work category + author's name + unit + supervisor (if any) + work name + work group on the outer packaging. The competition organizers are not responsible for any accidents that occur during the mailing process. Please send the physical entry to the National Museum of Chinese Writing.

V. Awards and Award Settings
1. After the end of the submission period, the National Museum of Chinese Writing will invite a panel of experts to form a judging committee. The selection process will follow the principles of fairness, justice, openness, and merit-based selection. Entries will be evaluated based on artistic value, practicality, fashionability, commemorative value, entertainment value, market potential, and other aspects.
2. Winning works will be jointly awarded certificates by the National Museum of Chinese Writing, the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, and the Nanjing University of the Arts. The prize money (pre-tax) will be awarded to the winning authors by the National Museum of Chinese Writing.

3. The Excellent Mentoring Awards will be presented to supervisors (if any) of first, second, and third prize winners in the competition. The Excellent Organization Award will be set up for units with outstanding organization.

4. Participants are encouraged to submit physical works for the competition. The medium for physical work submissions includes product samples, 3D models, videos, software and other multi-dimensional forms of display. Works with physical submissions will be given priority in the evaluation process under equal conditions. First, second, and third prize winners as well as the shortlisted applicants must provide design manuscript(s) (such as 3D diagrams, dimension diagrams or vector graphics). First, second, and third prize winners must also submit physical works.


VI. Others
1. The hosting organization will invite experts and scholars in the fields of ancient Chinese characters, graphic design, product design, etc. to provide guidance during the lesson instruction phase. Please follow the official competition media for specific information on time, location, and format.
2. After the competition evaluation is completed, the 2023 China International Chinese Character Culture Creative Design Competition Award-Winning Works Exhibition will be held at the National Museum of Chinese Writing. An album of the winning works will also be compiled.
3. The right to interpret this competition belongs to the National Museum of Chinese Writing, and all participants are deemed to agree to abide by all the regulations of this competition.
