The School of Movie & Television of Nanjing University of the Arts (NUA) grew out of the Department of Drama of NUA, which was established in 1969. In December 1998, it was reopened, and the Department of Movie, Television, and Art was set up. In January 2006, it developed into the School of Movie & Television.

The School now has a master's program, a doctoral program, and a post-doctoral station in Film. Performance was selected as a brand major in universities and colleges of Jiangsu Province and a national first-class undergraduate major construction site. Drama, Film & Television Literature was established as a brand characteristic major construction site in universities and colleges of Jiangsu Province. Drama, Film & Television was selected as a key discipline in the 13th Five-Year Plan of Jiangsu Province from 2016 to 2018, rated as B+ in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education released in 2017, and selected as a competitive discipline in the 13th Five-Year Plan of Jiangsu Province from 2018 to 2019. In 2021, Drama, Film & Television Literature was selected as a national first-class undergraduate major construction site and a provincial first-class undergraduate construction site in Jiangsu Province. Broadcasting and Hosting Art was approved as a major for first-class undergraduate construction in Jiangsu Province.

The School of Movie & Television has always adhered to the educational concept of strengthening foundation and being practice-oriented, emphasized the principle of accumulating knowledge as much as possible while releasing a little at a time in teaching, focused on self-cultivation, and tried to tap quality resources of film and television research and creation at home and abroad. The School aims to provide a necessary platform for students to develop themselves and acquire knowledge. In daily teaching, through multi-level all-around approaches such as classroom teaching, teaching practice, high-level symposium, film and television screening and broadcast, and drama tours, the School aims to cultivate comprehensive film and television talents with sharp artistic intuition, reasonable knowledge structure, and strong practical skills.

Guided by the three-in-one talent cultivation model, the School of Movie & Television takes theoretical teaching as a starting point and explores the teaching model that best meets the current needs of the industry through practice. The teaching is closely combined with the relevant industry mechanisms of drama, film, and television. Students are guided to understand what the major is targeted for and the prospect of the industry through classroom practice. Therefore, teaching can help students achieve a smooth transition from undergraduate courses to the workplace. After receiving a systematic education in the college, students can engage in film and television creation, drama performance, and teaching activities in art groups, institutions, and cultural media organizations. They will be able to create characters independently and have strong comprehensive performance skills, integrating aesthetic qualities, aesthetic tastes, aesthetic experience, aesthetic ideals, and aesthetic sensibility altogether.

The School consists of three departments, i.e., the Performance & Directing Department, the Broadcasting & Hosting Art Department, and the Drama, Film & Television Literature Department. It offers six undergraduate majors or orientations, i.e., Performance, Broadcasting & Hosting Art, Drama, Film & Television Literature (with Film and Television Planning and Production), Drama, Film & Television Directing, and Drama, Film & Television Art Design.

Performance

This major enjoys abundant faculty resources. Teachers of this major have rich teaching experience, strong theoretical knowledge, good practical skills, and a pioneering spirit.

The main teaching levels of the major are divided into undergraduate teaching and postgraduate teaching. At present, the undergraduate program enrolls students in Drama, Film & Television Performance, a major that focuses on training performing art professionals with sufficient theoretical knowledge of drama, a good grasp of creation rules and skills of performing art, a noble artistic character, and good artistic quality.

Broadcasting and Hosting Art

This major began to enroll the first batch of undergraduate students in 2001, and the first batch of postgraduate students in 2007. The graduates work in major mainstream media across the country. The faculty team has many years of teaching and practical experience, and all the teachers have master's degrees or above, including four professors and one associate professor, forming a multi-level and multi-field echelon integrating enterprises, universities, and research institutes.

The teaching of this major is based on the need of mass communication of audio language. It focuses on the development of connotation and the building of specialized characteristic courses and adopts the teaching management mode of group-based professional teaching and professional teachers as head teachers. It takes the lead in China in recitation level tests and social services.

Drama, Film & Television Literature

Since the first batch of undergraduate students was enrolled in 2000, this major has won many honors. In 2010, it was honored as a brand characteristic major in Jiangsu Province. In 2020, it was honored as a major for first-class undergraduate construction in Jiangsu Province. The discipline of Drama, Film & Television was honored as a key discipline in Jiangsu Province in 2011, and was rated as B+ in the fourth round of discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education in 2016. In 2018, it was honored as a competitive discipline in Jiangsu Province. In 2021, it was approved as a national first-class undergraduate major construction site and a major for first-class undergraduate construction in Jiangsu Province.

This major fully respects the law of art education and creation, focuses on students' professional skills, cultural background, and theoretical knowledge, and highlights the training of interdisciplinary talent and elite talent. Top alumni from this major include: Zhou Yunhai (playwright of the films My People, My Homeland, and Goldbuster), Li Chao (playwright of the cartoon Panda and Little Mole, which won the Five-One Project Award by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee), Liu Kai (playwright of the film Detective Chinatown), Chen Ji (playwright of the web series Cat's Cradle and executive director of the film Kaili Blues) and so on.

Drama, Film & Television Literature (with Film & Television Planning and Production)

Since 2006, when the first batch of undergraduate students was enrolled in this major, it has been aimed at training interdisciplinary talents that meet the needs of socio-economic development, that pursue artistic creation, that have a high level of cultural literacy and noble character, that have a clear understanding of the development of the audio-visual industry at home and abroad, and that can engage in film and television planning, production and management in drama, film and television institutions.

This major has a team of high-quality teachers, including one professor and two associate professors. All the teachers have master's degrees or above, and the students are cultivated to have correct values and professional qualities. The graduates of this major work in various major media outlets. Every year, there are graduates who pass the postgraduate entrance exam and are admitted to renowned Chinese and international universities to study further.

Drama, Film & Television Directing

This major boasts rich teaching and practical experience, and mainly trains talents for drama directing. The teaching attaches equal importance to artistic practice and theoretical learning, and focuses on tapping students' potential, especially the cultivation of students' skills to create and practice. This major cultivates excellent talents who have both artistic accomplishment and theoretical foundation and who master the creation rules of directing.

This major takes an active part in carrying out international academic exchanges, keeps pace with the most up-to-date information of this discipline, continuously enriches the teaching content, and improves teaching methods. The directing department has always attached importance to the artistic practice of teachers and students in the past 12 years. The teachers have guided students' plays for internship, graduation plays and out-of-school rehearsals, attracting attention and winning acclaim from the public.

Drama, Film & Television Art Design

This major belongs to the discipline of drama. It is called stage fine arts according to the traditional teaching system and industry insiders, and performance space design internationally. It includes drama, film and television art design, drama, film and television lighting design, and drama, film and television costume and makeup design. The department takes stage fine arts and lighting design courses as the main orientations, and also offers makeup and styling courses. It began to enroll undergraduate students in 2012. The faculty team has many years of teaching and practical experience, and all the teachers have master's degrees or above, including two associate professors, forming a multi-level and multi-field echelon integrating enterprises, universities, and research institutes. This major is committed to cultivating comprehensive performance space design talents to suit the needs of society and the industry.

In addition, the School has established teaching, scientific research, creation and service platforms such as the Theatre, Film & Television Arts Research Center, the NUA Research Institute for Films in the Period of the Republic of China, the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Film and Television of Jiangsu Province, Lai Shengchuan Research Center for Drama, the NUA Oral History Research Center, the NUA Film Hall, the NUA Putonghua Test Station and the Recitation Art Level Test Site, and the Broadcasting and Hosting Level Test Site for Teenagers.

The School has a team of teachers with relatively strong teaching and scientific research capability and a reasonable echelon-based structure, including seven full-time and part-time doctoral supervisors, six postgraduate supervisors, six teachers with senior professional titles and 17 teachers with deputy senior professional titles. Graduates of this major work in Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center, Jiangsu Provincial Theater, Nanjing Drama Troupe, CCTV, Jiangsu TV Station, Beijing Film Academy, Youku, Tencent, Shanghai Film Group, China Academy of Sciences and many other cultural and art institutions and universities. They are well-received by employers.

The School attaches great importance to artistic creation and social services. In recent years, it has launched graduation plays such as Where Have All the Flowers Gone, The Red Sky, and Home; short sketches including Keeping All My Dreams and Anecdotes of Special Force Guys won the first prize of the Gold Award of National College Students Art Exhibition for many times. The School attaches great importance to serving society and promoting cultural inheritance, and has undertaken language and art training and recitation social arts level test for governments at all levels.
