The predecessor of the School of Fine Arts and Calligraphy of Nanjing University of the Arts (NUA) is called Shanghai College of Fine Arts. In 1912, it was established as the earliest modern college of fine arts in China by Liu Haisu who is believed to be one of the founding fathers of modern Chinese art education. In 1952, it merged with Suzhou College of Fine Arts founded by Yan Wenliang, and gradually developed into today's School of Fine Arts and Calligraphy of NUA. Over the past years, the School has borne in mind the country's most fundamental interests and remained committed to educating people with professional and moral excellence. Revolving around training first-class graduates in arts, it has developed a high-level talent cultivation system to foster top-notch artists and researchers with a focus on China and a global perspective.The discipline of Fine Arts and Calligraphy has a tremendous influence both at home and abroad. In 2007, it was rated as a national key discipline by the Ministry of Education, ranked third in the third round of discipline evaluation, and was graded A (tying for the third place nationwide) in the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education. The School of Music of Nanjing University of the Arts (NUA) is one of the oldest higher music education institutions in China. In 1921, Shanghai College of Fine Arts, the predecessor of NUA, opened a six-week summer music training class for art teachers, marking the official incorporation of music professional training into the College's teaching system. In 1923, Shanghai College of Fine Arts established the Department of Music. In 1952, the Department of Music of East China Institution of the Arts was founded after the Department of Music of Shanghai College of Fine Arts merged with the Music Major of the Department of Art, Shandong University. In 1958, the Department of Music of East China Institution of the Arts was renamed the Department of Music of NUA. In 1999, the name was finally decided as the School of Music of NUA. The School of Music employs over 100 staff members, of which 12 are doctoral and 62 postgraduate supervisors. The total number of undergraduates, postgraduates, and doctoral students exceeds 1,000. The School of Design of Nanjing University of Arts (NUA) enjoys a long and clear history, which traces its roots to the Crafts and Pattern Department set up by the Private Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in the 1920s. The School of Drama,Film & Television of Nanjing University of the Arts (NUA) grew out of the Department of Drama of NUA, which was established in 1969. In December 1998, it was reopened, and the Department of Movie, Television, and Art was set up. In January 2006, it developed into the School of Drama,Film & Television.The School now has a master's program, a doctoral program, and a post-doctoral station in Film. Performance was selected as a brand major in universities and colleges of Jiangsu Province and a national first-class undergraduate major construction site. The School of Dance is a secondary school of Nanjing University of the Arts (NUA). It developed from the Dance Subject established by the Secondary School of NUA in 1970. In 2000, it began to enroll full-time undergraduate and college students nationwide. The Department of Dance was founded in 2004 and renamed the School of Dance in 2007. There are more than 700 undergraduates, postgraduates, doctoral students, and international students. The School of Dance has four undergraduate majors including Choreography, Dance Performance, Dancology, and Dance Education, and eight undergraduate training directions including Chinese Folk Dance Performance, Chinese Classical Dance Performance, and so on. The School of Contemporary Music and Technology of Nanjing University of the Arts (NUA), following the development of the times, aims to train versatile talent in music, with the abilities of self-development and entrepreneurship. In November 1995, NUA joined hands with Chubu Technical Academy of Musical Instruments to establish a piano tuning academy affiliated with NUA and set up the Piano Tuning major, creating the first school-running model of Chinese-foreign cooperation in Jiangsu. In 1998, the academy was renamed NUA (China-Japan) Aiyue Higher Technical College and had three more majors, namely Music Education, Music Composition, and Popular Music Creation. Industrial Design of Nanjing University of the Arts, set up as a major in 1993, was developed into the School of Industrial Design in 2008. The School has more than 800 students on campus, including undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and doctoral students. The School owns the first batch of national first-class majors and the provincial characteristic majors of higher education institutions. The history of enrolling international students at Nanjing University of the Arts (NUA) can date back to the 1950s. In 1995, the School of International Education was established. For more than 20 years, it has admitted thousands of international students from more than 80 countries and regions and trained excellent international graduates in different majors.
